It is 8:09 on a Saturday night, the kids are asleep, Marko is watching TV and I've had far too much wine (i.e. 2.5 glasses of wine instead of the usual 2. Living life on the edge! I am pathetically lightweight in the wine department).
I am sitting at my computer, working through my email and doing something I very seldom do - listening to music. Because I am very (VERY) sensitive to noise, I can't have music playing while I work, but tonight I thought I would put my headphones on and take a little trip down memory lane.
Its amazing how many memories come flooding back when you listen to music from way-back-then. I know for some, music is a very important part of their lives, and has always been. Not so much for me. I like music, but it doesn't feature hugely in my life. I listen to talk radio when I drive and when I am at home, I prefer silence.
But if there was ever a time in my life when music was important, it was in my good old bad rave days. I had some of the best and worst times of my life then. We had So.Much.Fun! My girlfriends and I were all single, relatively wealthy, skinny, gorgeous and always ready to party. We went out every weekend, dressed up to the nines and full of fun. We danced and danced and danced. Hmmm, wonder where that ecstatic energy came from.....(Ok, so that part was bad, but damn it was fun)
Listening to the music takes me right back to those times, and I am sitting here at my computer, 12 years, 2 kids and 10 pounds later with a huge grin in my face. Ok, so maybe it isn't something I would ever want my kids to do, but damn...we had fun.
Our ultimate theme song from those times - 'So in love with you' by Duke. Aaahhh, those were the days.
What song is the theme song from some of the best times of your life? Share.
All These Things That I Have Done by The Killers.
My theme song.

I too am very sensitive to noise. How have you handled this with two kids?

The Good Ole Grateful Dead. Whooohooooooo!!!
Those were the days, my friend.
Dancing was a sport and we were young and wild and oh so happy.
I LOVE you, Miss Tertia.

I've been listening to Lucinda Williams practically all my life. Her songs are my soundtrack. When I was a growing up in Texas we used to drive miles to see her playing at some dirt-floor music festivals - now I have to book expensive tickets at some fancy place in LA. It's worth it, though, because the music still brings me back to something that feels so basic to myself.

I'm with kinder - The Grateful Dead! Specifically, Scarlet Begonias or China Cat Sunflower. Makes me grin just thinking of it - twirling around wearing an indian print sundress ... dude ...

my first ever 'my song'? I'm not in love by 10cc . . . I had a cube transistor radio (this was the early 70's mind), and i used to listen to American Top 40 with Casey Casem with the radio hidden under my pillow (my dad HATED modern music) . . . the first time i heard "I'm not in Love" i broke out in goosebumps and waited for that song every night for weeks after that.
muslin sundresses and cheesecloth skirts, and sunbathing and purple irridescent eyeshadow . . .
I only need to hear the first few notes of that song and i am back in my teens again, with skinny legs and no boobs, and a waist smaller than my thighs are now!

This isn't from a good time in my life but a rough time, it's the song that could get me through anything: "Take on Me," by aHa. I know, I know. Still, all I had to do was hear that, and I could get through anything.
The gym was playing early 80s music today, and every.single.song brought back so many memories. Guess I'm getting old!

"American Pie," which was always on the jukebox at the bar I hung out at my freshman year in college.
And later, the Grateful Dead.

Darude - Sandstorm, brings back my naughty clubbing days in London - circa 2000/2001.
"E" must create a chemical memory in the brain, because whenever I hear one of those trippy, clubby songs, I feel like I am on E and in a club!
It's a good, good feeling....and feels a million years away from my current reality of life with 3 small children!!

Wham!, Culture Club, Duran Duran, INXS - carefree memories of days filled with hardly any stress, clean bedding, ironed clothes, filled bread box, pocket money, lift clubs.... compliments of The Parents.
Now that we are The Parents.... it's hard bloody work!

Wham! definitely. And Jimmy Sommerville. Billy Idol. The Queen. U2. And the song 'I heard it through the grapevine', which is from the late sixties, but to me is associated with the movie 'the big chill'.
Ciao

Aaaaargh!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that Duke track and had forgotten all about it. Just went to buy it on ITunes US but can't find it :(
One huge downside of moving to the States is the dearth of cheesey Eurohouse electronic dance music...
