You wanted to know more about my life in SA. Here is a view of my back garden, which borders on a wetlands reserve.
As you all know, when you live in Africa you have wild animals roaming freely in your back yard. Thought I would show you mine.
Marko, FIL and MIL standing looking out.
3 guesses who 'helped' with the photo.
Wow a safari a minute. And your own airplane. I can't wait to visit your continent!
Posted by: ManhattanAnne | 20 March 2005 at 07:55 PM
Fekking hysterical!
Posted by: Jaine | 20 March 2005 at 08:01 PM
Julie, Julie, Julie!
Posted by: patty | 20 March 2005 at 08:01 PM
Tertia, we see deer in our yard here in Massachusetts (north east USA), often. They like to munch on the berry bushes at the front door. I don't think I ever saw any deer in Durbanville South Africa, but I did run into a few Cape Cobra's and a few Rinkhals spitting cobra's!
You forgot to show us a photo of the tree hut you live in.
Posted by: RDS | 20 March 2005 at 08:04 PM
no Jackalope? Bummer, maybe they are a North America thing.
Posted by: Heather | 20 March 2005 at 08:08 PM
That totally beats the lizards that we have crawling on our window screens here in Georgia, USA. (we also have bunnies, deer, turtles, frogs, etc.)
Posted by: Pam | 20 March 2005 at 08:12 PM
Silly Julie! I bet she thought she could trick us into thinking that was your yard... she's got a Felix Ibixii, which is native to South AMERICA; a Monstorous Latexii, native to the east Pacific islands; and a FIL Ridiculousii which is only found inside the Arctic Circle of North America. We need to get this girl an ed-u-makation about the animals of the world!
Beyond that, lovely yard -- I'm jealous! And what a great yard to play in when the twins get older ;-)
Posted by: Kestralyn | 20 March 2005 at 08:13 PM
Bwahahahaha!
I can't wait to see photos of the kids playing with all of those animals (when they're older, of course).
That's rad that dinosaurs still roam in South Africa. You learn something new every day.
Posted by: Natalie | 20 March 2005 at 08:24 PM
It was so exhilirating to see the Lesser Grey-Footed Godzilla in your back yard. They're endangered in North America. I've heard that you can attract them to your yard with building scraps.
Posted by: Carol | 20 March 2005 at 08:30 PM
Ok. I'm definitely moving to SA. Carry a spear and have my own assplane?
All we get here in the US are bums and the occasional crazed monkey. Oh yeah, and the door to door Mormons (but I'm sure they've invaded your continent too.... sorry about that!) Sometimes America really sucks ass. ;)
Posted by: korin | 20 March 2005 at 08:43 PM
wait.....why aren't you all wearing khaki shorts and hats and carrying bazookas? THAT's what everyone who lives in Africa does. Like the guy on Jurassic Park. Do you have raptors too?
Posted by: lily | 20 March 2005 at 08:48 PM
Definitely Julie. I grew up in Louisiana, and people I met in other states just assumed we had alligators roaming around in our backyards. Um, not so much.
Posted by: Amanda | 20 March 2005 at 09:02 PM
beautiful! the plane is a nice touch ;)
Posted by: wix | 20 March 2005 at 09:03 PM
So does Godzilla just summer in SA? I wish my backyard was that exciting. That elephant is freakin' huge. I wouldn't let the babies play out there! Michigan is drab!
Posted by: jenni | 20 March 2005 at 09:04 PM
wow, definitely more interesting than new zealand where we just have our 14-sheep-for-each-person roaming around our yards and pooping in the house.
But they do keep the lawn nice and short.
Posted by: stephu | 20 March 2005 at 09:22 PM
Haha that was great! The only wild animals here is a 4 year old boy, LOL. The dad is pretty tame by now, but sometimes also shows some wild behavior.
(((I forgot to mention in your survey, but I live in western Michigan, USA. Still live in the city I was born in.)))
Posted by: Kate | 20 March 2005 at 09:25 PM
Very naff, and good for a laff.
Posted by: Mollie | 20 March 2005 at 09:30 PM
Wow - what an interesting mix of wildlife you have there in SA!
Can't wait to see pics of the babes playing in the backyard! Will they ride the elephant?
Posted by: Karen | 20 March 2005 at 09:42 PM
Yeah, yeah. So Africa's wild. But I've got BUNNIES in MY back yard. Beat that, why don't ya?
Posted by: Kam | 20 March 2005 at 09:53 PM
The king / emporer penguins from down near Antarctica were a nice touch. Mind you, you forgot the kangaroos that migrated from Australia.
Posted by: Rosemary | 20 March 2005 at 09:54 PM
lololol that's awesome. The plane with the banner is the kicker, I was fine till I saw that, now I'm a giggly mess.
Posted by: MollieBee | 20 March 2005 at 10:38 PM
Hee, hee, hee. It's just how I pictured it, but I wanted to see you in the pic with a bone through your nose.
Posted by: LPF | 20 March 2005 at 10:42 PM
I laughed almost at hard at that pic as I did to your response to Lloyd!
Posted by: Bridgette | 20 March 2005 at 10:50 PM
Just as I'd imagined it from my childhood saturday evenings watching Johnny Weismuller Tarzan movies.
But you'll have to get the kids a monkey pretty soon, right? And with twins, do they each get one, or will they have to share?
Posted by: cathy b | 20 March 2005 at 10:59 PM
Wow, a Panda AND a penguin? And how 'bout that Preying Mantis that looks to be 4 feet long?
I think you should submit this to National Enquirer. You could sell tickets to your backyard, and make a FORTUNE!
Posted by: Woody's Girl | 20 March 2005 at 11:01 PM
oh man
godzilla makes the photo. really.
lol!
Posted by: usako | 20 March 2005 at 11:18 PM
ROFL!!!!!
But now I'm really scared. I thought it might be nice to visit Africa some day, but I didn't know you had mutant elephants that are twice the height of a two-story house and almost as big as godzilla!!! And what adorable mutant giraffes that are under 2 meters tall. I bet the kids will have loads of fun back there once they get bigger, but I do hope you can tame and train all those creatures before then. Or are you hiring Julie for that job? That's the pic I want to see of Julie taming all the animules.
What a hoot - you two are hilarious.
Posted by: Nicole | 20 March 2005 at 11:25 PM
Wow, I've never seen a panda big enough to eat a giraffe!
Posted by: KellyH | 20 March 2005 at 11:34 PM
Wetlands? Doesn't that mean a heck of a lot of mosquitoes??!! Nice zoo btw ;)
Posted by: jen | 21 March 2005 at 12:00 AM
Thanks for the laugh this morning! The kids will never be bored in your back garden. Just like my 3 year old never tires of mucking around with the giant kangaroos, koalas and riding the emus in our back yard.
Can we get a pic of your tree house? ;)
Posted by: Sue | 21 March 2005 at 12:16 AM
Can't. type. too weak. the laughter. it hurts.
Posted by: JenL | 21 March 2005 at 12:17 AM
Sure but what about the Ridgebacks?
Posted by: Nicole | 21 March 2005 at 01:03 AM
Actually, it's quite remarkable... I find it so fascinating how different the views from our respective backyards are... see... here in Canada... the view out my window is our neighbour, Trapper Eddie's log cabin... he brings us a daily ration of maple syrup and smoked salmon every morning on his way to check his trapline. He has a trusty side-kick, Nukshuk... an Inuit seal hunter whose Igloo is just up on the glacier a mile down the road.... and on really lucky days he brings us a choice piece of whale blubber which is my mother's secret ingredient in her seal-flipper pie! See... and Tertia... while your internet connection is fueled by antelope... ours is much slower... as we have dozens of treadmills powered by angry little beavers... it used to be a bear... but he got a big break in the U.S. starring in TV commercials... so we lost him. You know... National Geographic just doesn't catch the subtleties of our nations' atmosphere.

That's gorgeous! ^__^
Posted by: Cadi | 21 March 2005 at 01:43 AM
Bwah! It was the plane banner that had me ROTFL.
Posted by: draadje | 21 March 2005 at 01:44 AM
Hi Tertia - I had to comment today. That's hysterical. Is that godzilla in the top right? I'm Australian and I always get asked if we have kangaroos and koalas in our backyard (of course we do).
Posted by: Angela | 21 March 2005 at 01:46 AM
LMAO!
Posted by: Amber | 21 March 2005 at 01:50 AM
What?! No kangaroos??? Every backyard has at least one or two...
Posted by: JenH | 21 March 2005 at 03:19 AM
ROFLMAO!! Julie left out the man eating lions that just roam around your backyard! LOL!!
Posted by: Lori | 21 March 2005 at 03:38 AM
So f'n funny! Where are Tarzan and Jai (or Boy and Cheetah)? Do you ride the elephant to work & shopping? I rode an elephant once-never spread my legs as wide before or since! Do you have the big disc thing in your lower lip? Cuz that'd be something we'd all like to see.
Posted by: shelly | 21 March 2005 at 03:50 AM
Oh my word! That's hysterical. So fucking funny! I was already cracking up and THEN I noticed godzilla. OMG, the laughing never stops.
Posted by: Drama Queen | 21 March 2005 at 04:27 AM
Here I was thinking I'd get an ACTUAL picture of your lovely garden, and this is what I get.
Off to search for something to mop up fucking diet soda from my keyboard. AGAIN.
Could you post a warning "ATTN: IDIOTS WITH DRINK IN MOUTH - SWALLOW FIRST"
Pretty please?
xoxo
Posted by: Boulder | 21 March 2005 at 04:45 AM
jeez. I freak out when I catch a raccoon rummaging through my garbage. I am going to guess that flicking a light on and off won't make all of your friends go away!! Loved it!!
Posted by: melissa | 21 March 2005 at 04:47 AM
You nearly had me there for a second....until I saw the PENGUIN! No wonder you don't get out much with the kids...! Too funny! No, better make that THREE funny!
Posted by: Serina | 21 March 2005 at 05:04 AM
I thought Godzilla was dead. Imagine my surprise, finding out he's hiding in SA!
Posted by: Jill | 21 March 2005 at 06:03 AM
So does anyone else have that Blue Oyster Cult song going through their head now: "oh no, they say he's got to go, go go Godzilla. . . "
Posted by: KellyH | 21 March 2005 at 06:32 AM
That is SO funny! Hysterical, I tell you. Reminds me of the questions I used to get when I was a kid and I told people I was from California .... people ALWAYS asked if I lived by the beach. Ummmm, NO, not everyone lives by the beach in California, especially when they live in the CENTRAL VALLEY.
And did you know that kids who live in Australia all have kangaroos in their backyards? It's TRUE!
I'm sharing this one with my BIL, who is also from South Africa. He'll get a kick out of this. =)
Posted by: Rebekah | 21 March 2005 at 07:11 AM
This is fucking AMAZING! I have not enjoyed an image so much in a long, long time!!
You two ROCK!
Posted by: Liz | 21 March 2005 at 07:43 AM
Hmm pandas hey?
Posted by: andrea | 21 March 2005 at 07:53 AM
OMG!!!!
I wish I was in exciting SA and not in boring old Europe, where you can only find cats and dogs!
Posted by: Chiala | 21 March 2005 at 10:42 AM
Wow Tertia, that's booooootiful! We here in Sydney also have amazing wild animals, like kangaroos and koalas, cruising the city streets...no really!
:-)
Posted by: neety | 21 March 2005 at 12:14 PM
Is the man on the left dressed as a matador? Couldn't see any bulls so is he unemployed or retired?
Posted by: Jean | 21 March 2005 at 12:14 PM
Tertia
Whatever it is you've been on lately, I want some. Have you taken steroids for your creative bits?

Posted by: LadyBug | 21 March 2005 at 04:34 PM
That is fucking hilarious! Julie rocks!
Posted by: Cari | 21 March 2005 at 05:04 PM
That is so funny! No wonder Julie hasn't posted lately, she's been busy!
Posted by: Debe | 21 March 2005 at 06:54 PM
So, does Marko always dress up like a Zulu tribesman?
Your backyard would scare me.
Four-foot long BUGS!!??? Yech!
Posted by: sheilah | 21 March 2005 at 07:33 PM
You know, ART for humans is one thing, but we have to stop experimenting on animals without their consent. That poor, poor cat-zebra. (I can only hope the mom-cat had a C-section with a head like that on the kitten!)
Posted by: Jen (yup, another one) | 21 March 2005 at 08:02 PM
I love that the praying mantis is larger than the giraffe.
Posted by: chasmyn | 21 March 2005 at 08:16 PM
Oooooh! I love it when foreigners play into Western stereotypes! So much fun! Heh.
Posted by: Katie | 21 March 2005 at 08:49 PM
Hey, the boss from Zimbabwe says your picture is pretty accurate.
You're a fruitcake.
Posted by: Scully | 21 March 2005 at 10:53 PM
And I thought I had a hazzardous backyard! The kangaroo, koala, funnell web spider, crocodile & echidna hanging around my joint have NOTHING on your Africa.
Posted by: Simone | 21 March 2005 at 11:56 PM
I sure hope your FIL isn't going to be sexist and will teach KATE how to use the spear, too!
(and when did your cat grow antlers?)
