As you know, I had GREAT excitement in my life two years when I got a shiny new vibrating toy – the very sexy Spindel. It ticked all the boxes – neat, compact, effective but most importantly, something that warmed the cockles of my penny-pinching heart – IT SAVED BOTH TIME AND MONEY!! Oh, there are few things that make me happier than saving time and / or money. I love that Spindel, with all my heart.
And then, just when I thought it could not get better….. they brought out a NEW Spindel. A bigger, better version of the already perfect previous version. Blissful sigh. It’s FABULOUS! Now I can fit even more things in the Spindel. If you stand still long enough in my house, I might just chuck you in as well.
For those of you poor souls who have not heard about the wonder and miracle that is a Spindel, let me show you the light and the way: Firstly, you can get the official explanation on their website or here on my previous post. But in my own words, the Spindel looks like a very small top loading washing machine. It has a drum inside that spins really, really fast. Like 100x (10X? A million times? Don’t know, but MUCH) faster than your washing machine. And basically what it does is spin the clothes superfast for three minutes, getting all the excess water out your washing. I get about a litre and a half of water that comes out after my washing machine has spun my washing*. Once done, your washing is just about 50-90% dry and all you need to do is hang it outside / in your garage for a few hours and it’s dry. It is FANTASTIC for us winter rain people but works like a charm for anyone who doesn’t want to use their tumble dryer or wait for ages for the stuff to dry outside. It uses less electricity than a light bulb. I really love this machine so very much. You know when you discover something very awesome; you want to tell everyone about it because you just know they will love it too. I told my hairdresser about it (awesome for hair salons that have to wash and tumble dry towels all the time) and my 24 year old gym trainer who already thinks I am ancient and is now even more convinced that I have completely lost it due to my excitement about a machine that dries my washing. (One must get one’s thrills where one can)

I am extremely fortunate that the Spindel people gifted the new Spindel to me. (note: I was raving about the Spindel before they gifted the new Spindel to me, so there is nothing in it for me to promote it). When they delivered the new Spindel they asked me if I wanted to donate my old (perfectly working) one to charity. And OF COURSE I said yes. Spindel has donated quite a few units to various charities and it has made a huge difference to them as well. Especially for those charities who have to wash lots of nappies, linen, kid clothes etc.
Have a look at this awesome feedback from the charities that they gifted the previous Spindel to:
Fikelela Children's Centre
The Fikelela Children's Centre is an outreach program of the Fikelela Aids Project. It is situated in Mandela Park Khayelitsha and serves the area of the Western Cape. They provide a safe, secure and nurturing temporary care housing for up to 40 children (0-8 years) that have been abandoned, neglected or orphaned, affected or infected by HIV/Aids. “Winter often feels like a time that is dominated with washing. With 38 little ones to care for, the piles of washing are unending. With so many toddlers being toilet trained, the pajamas and bed linen pile up fast! We have two choices – to fill every conceivable space with wet washing, which soon becomes smelly and creates a damp atmosphere where the children are playing or sleeping. Or else we put the tumble dryer on for ages it seems. This has a huge impact on our budget and is not in line with our commitment to walking lightly on this earth…
The Spindel is a wonderful addition to our home! With a few minutes of whizzing at top speed, the majority of the water is spun out of the clothes. Some of the lighter items can be ironed and worn immediately, others have to hang overnight. Then with just a few minutes in the tumble dryer if necessary we have warm happy kids again!! Viva spindle, Viva!!” Kate Lagwa

“Thank you so much for the Spindel. We have been inundated with rain this winter and it has made such a huge difference to not have piles of smelly washing and has helped to cut down on our electricity bill! Thank you so much!” Graeme Cairns
Zonnebloem Cottage Foster Home
In May 2009, the Zonnebloem Cottage Foster Home was established on the grounds of Zonnebloem Estate. The children at the foster home range in age from 5 to 13 years. The children attend the Zonnebloem School where they are nicely settled in and family life is as normal as it can get.
“I am so amazed at how much water is spun out by the Spindel machine after the washing comes out of the washing machine, where it also has a spinning process. Almost a bucket of water is spun out!
No need for washing to hang all day, a couple of hours outside and you have dry washing and this way we can do more loads of washing on a day, as the clothing dries very quickly. This is a wonderful tool to have in the home, especially during winter. We are grateful to the donors for thinking of us.” Bridget (House Mother)
This is an awesome, awesome little machine. It will change your life J
*Different washing machines have different spin ‘strengths’, so you might not get as much water out as I do. But even the best / strongest washing machine wont be as effective as the Spindel due to the size and design of the Spindel. I have a huge top loader that even though it is very powerful, it doesn’t spin fast / strong enough to get most of the water out, so the Spindel really makes a HUGE difference for me. I have one friend who said the Spindel didn’t make a massive difference, but I think they must have a super duper fancy machine that spins way faster or more powerfully than most.
I was so excited to buy a spindle after I read about them on various blogs a few years ago. However, I am so so disappointed that it has ruined at least 6 items of my clothing!! Fleece tracksuit tops, my hubby's expensive work jerseys from Woolies, and my baby's fleece babygro have all had holes burnt in them!! I was shocked!! I loved the spindle and it saved me a huge amount of money and effort (4 kids under the age of 7 generate a LOT of washing). But now I cant recommend it to anyone :(

Hi Jo,
I am sorry to hear about your bad experience. However, the Spindel cannot damage even the most delicate fabrics, as long as it is loaded correctly. If it was overloaded (i.e. the items were loaded too high in the drum), then a garment could have touched on the upper rim. It is recommended that you leave a gap of at least 2cm between the height of the loaded items and the upper rim of the drum.
If you need any further information then please contact [email protected] I just wanted to assure you that the Spindel is safe for all fabrics, as long as the loading instructions are adhered to.
Thanks,
Paul
