you're really begging for the kind of comment i might write, you know.

hahahaha Rainbow, I am really surprised at your restraint. Most unlike you.

My sister had under the muscle and while it did hurt for some time after (I'd have to ask for the details) the result is really good. She had a massive difference in size and now they look like lovely perky boobs.

Tertia, please say you're joking. Please say, "Just kidding! Don't worry! I'm not going to use up all my G&D cleverness towards another kind of outer-change!"

Please say you meant to write, "Since my husband who has privately (and therefore publicly) asked me for more time of COURSE I'm going to use my G&D brilliance to coming up with wonderful things to do with him (or quiet cozy things). Of course I'm not going to respond to his request by spending our precious time researching breast issues or recovering from surgery! Of course I'm not going to NOT learn from the lessons of the past few weeks and spend my excess emotional and logistical time hopping into another "project" rather than being sure to giving myself time to recover from something like like Adam's phases or the I-know-it-can-be-ennervating prospect of an FET. Of COURSE I know that I've been emotionally strung out over the last few months and am facing more emotional tumult and of COURSE I'm not going to put my family through any more emotional upsanddowns than I have to over the next few months so of COURSE I'm not really going to do this breast thing right now you sillies!

"You ninnies! How could you forget I'm not just G&D but also Smart and Self-Aware! I'm just coming out of a dreadful period and of COURSE I'm not even going to begin to think about things like breasts until I get us all on a more even course!."

Please, Tertia, tell us that's what you MEANT to say!

Redd

I don't have new boobs, but if money was no object I would do it. Tersh, you've talked about it before so apparently the desire is still there. Go for it!

you know I love mine! www.plasticsurgery.co.za approx R20000, Eurosilicon over the muscle. The Eurosilicon felt sooo different to the other implants that I felt...much more pliable and realistic moving. The best thing is that only the people that know, know. Everyone else thinks that they are real (other best thing is that I had no pain...love the SA painkillers!)

Shout if you want the finer details xxx

No photos, but they feel fake. My sister's boobs that is, I don't have them myself. She got something like 470mL, larger than I expected. It has made her be fitted for a 10DD bra which still looks fairly small on her frame due to her wide-looking rib frame. That doesn't make sense. She has a narrow ribcage if you look from the side and a wide ribcage if you look from the front, so 10DD's look pretty standard from the front. She had them placed under the pectoral muscles and it cost her around AUS$9700 which is apparently towards the high end but the surgeon has excellent feedback. Apparently they don't look the way they are expected to look for at least the first 2 months, the implants drop over time to the expected placement. The scarring is pretty minimal, they look better with clothes on than with clothes off, and they feel kind of, well, weird. But she looks fantastic with clothes on and she is thrilled with the results. She is also trying to talk me into getting them too.

I don't have them, but know plenty that do here in the states. That is very inexpensive! Under the muscle looks better on those that I know and they don't feel that fake. Also, could you get the TUBA done? Only one tiny little scar in the belly button and you can even shower the next day. Recovery seems to be much easier with that method. If I needed boobs that's what I would opt for. I say go for it! I'm debating on a tummy tuck, myself.

Mine are almost 13 years old now and still look the same as they did when the swelling first went down. I went with saline (silicone wasn't legal again yet) under the muscle and didn't find the recovery to be too bad. I was back at work (desk job) a few days later with the help of some nice pain pills.

Mine are very modest -- I simply went from a complete board to a nice B. They've survived 20 seasons of womens' soccer, 2 1/2 pregnancies, and nursing two kids. And still no one but my husband knows I have them.

If this is something you want to do, have wanted to do for a while, and have the means to do, by all means, go ahead.

Sigh. Naturally voluptuous and shapely boobs was about the one and only physical advantage I had over most girls, growing up. I have great natural boobs, especially considering my age and the fact that I breastfed for a year (they didn't change at all). And now, any scrawny girl can have my boobs for a few thou. Sad. If I had all the money in the world, I can't buy their flat tummy and shapely butt. Or large, beautiful eyes and flirtatious nature. Or long legs and gorgeous feet. Yet they can have the one thing I was given by God for a few bucks. Makes me sad.

Totally off-topic, sorry for the little rant! Enjoy your new breasts.

Can't help you on the boobs bit (mine, ginormous as they are, came as part of the rest of the G&D package), but as always I was amazed to see that SA is so close to China and that you have giant pandas wandering around in your backyard.

...and how much does it cost to have that "Tertia is an Asshole" banner continuously flying around outside?

I had mine done in high school (one boob only, fixing a congenital issue). At the time only saline was legal, so I have saline under the muscle, entered through the armpit.

Because I didn't have a lot of breast tissue on that side it always felt harder than my other (natural) breast. Twelve years later, it is smaller than the other -- it didn't grow/shrink the same after pregnancy and breastfeeding as the other side. However it is now much softer and feels more like the other side -- I'm assuming due to the changes from breastfeeding. (As for the size difference, it's not too terrible -- half a cup? -- and I won't do anything about it for a while as I'm waiting to see the effects of the weight I'm losing on the other side)

I had mine done about 7 years ago and wanted to keep the change very modest. I went from a 34AB to a 36C. I went under the muscle and the incision is under the breast. Skip the "through the nipple" or "through the navel" business unless you plan on stripping and hanging from a pole or swing upside down, which is the only time that kind of scarring would show.

I was a little freaked out afterwards that they were too big because of the swelling, but they ended up just as I had wished. I healed quickly, and never did need the script for pain, just some tylenol. I did saline, but I can't remember the mfr. I am extremely happy with MY choice. And if you can be even more G&D, why not?

Tertia, I am so sorry but I have to agree with the post from Redd above. It seems like the boob job is maybe a way to focus on something else, a new project? It won't be the answer you're looking for. I do the same thing so I recognize it... anyway I couldn't help but throw it out there.

No matter how small the risk, I would not undergo elective, cosmetic surgery unless it was for a terrible scar, harelip, etc. Too afraid of anesthesia. Am surprised you wan to do this, a bit. Please think about seeking to change the outside to "fix" the inside.

Oky Doky. Once apon a time I owrked as a nutirtionists aid for a woman who dealt exclusively with Gastric Bypass patients. These ladies loose so much weight that they usually end up with some kind of breast repair/enhancment when they have reached their goal..... so I have seen a LOT of boobs! I say definately go for under the muscle.. the boobs look ( and feel) GREAT! The biggest downfall... as you age you skin looses elasticity. SO.... when my boss would bend over ( her office was in her home, many a morning found her in her towel fresh from the shower as we discussed the days business) she would end up with these.... tassels. Her skin would slip down and..... dangle...... a bit on the ends since her implants didn't sag with the skin. For me that isn't a big deal, but something to consider! She also got ( on her 2nd boob job) natural (tear drop) shaped breasts with textured implants. Seriously, my 57 year old boss had the hottest breasts ever! My plan for my 35th b-day is to get myself a pair that matches hers. HOT!

I had mine done almost 2yrs ago. Best thing I ever did. I went from a small B to a full C and they look very natural. Noone can tell I've had them done unless they knew me before. Several of my girlfriends went to my dr after seeing my results. I went under the muscle, the incision is underneath the breast, I don't know the manufacturer but they are called High Profile Implants, which means they sit up a little higher. I pd $5000 here in the US. My recovery was rough but I had never been PG before so my breasts had never been stretched and they literally filled the implants as full as they could so they said I would be really sore. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Does this mean no cycle or is this if cycle doesn't work?

Does this mean no cycle or is this if cycle doesn't work?

Once again, Tertia, I have to commend you for opening yourself up to lots of feedback and commentary on your lifestyle from total strangers.
I think the comments from Redd and some others about your obsession with projects is interesting. What first comes to mind is that, hey, you're not smoking crack, you're not having an affair, you're not putting your kids in harms way. What is the harm of having a project?
I guess my only concern is that ever since I started reading your blog, I've been struck by the amount of projects you take on. Mother of twins AND stressful job AND marriage AND book AND blog. I remember being stunned to read that you were also taking on organizing your MBA reunion. I am a very active and involved person, but your level of involvement and projects is truly stunning.
So, while a boob job is ultimately a harmless project -- and who among us doesn't eat too much or drink too much or shop too much or gossip too much just to get through the day -- I'm wondering if it will do anything to calm your spirit or just fuel your need for distractions.
I also wonder, why can't your husband and your kids be your main project?
Just something to thing about.
For me, I have found that yoga and meditation (if you're not into prayer) really does help in quieting the mind, and helping us be OK in the present. Of course, that can become an obsession in itself, but you might like it.

Don't have them, don't want them, like my natural small B's just fine. But I wonder about those who say "no one can tell." How do you know that? I can spot fake boobs a mile away - high on the chest, very round, don't move, often too big for the woman's frame. Not attractive as far as I'm concerned. Very few look natural, most look cartoonish to me. (Of course I don't comment on them to those who have them, so maybe they think "no one can tell.") It used to be "large breasts" that were considered attractive. Now it seems the standard has changed to "large fake breasts".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most surgeons who do breast lifts for women in their forties/fifties recommend/push implants because the underlying tissue has lost its shape (it's not just the skin). I'd heard that it's actually quite hard to get a surgeon to agree to a breast lift if you refuse the implants, because without something to support the tissue, it's hard to get a good result.

So implants for older women aren't about enhancing the size, necessarily: they're about supporting what's already there, in a more acceptable shape. [We could dissect "acceptable" forever, but let's just take it as a given that we all wrestle honestly with this, and let it go.]

The difficulty for me (someone who would dearly love to get back my lovely 36B/C breasts, lost to IF weight gain and 3.5 years of nursing triplets) is that there's really no going back. I can have the boob job -- and I very well might, if a whole series of lucky chances fall into place and I can justify the much greater cost when people are starving etc. (an internal dialogue with myself and NOT NOT NOT a slam on other folks' choices, I already justify many extravaganzes I know) -- BUT the boobs I would get would NOT be the perfect youthful boobs, because I'm no longer perfect and youthful. It's rather like those very well-done smooth-faced sixty year olds in Hollywood (Jacquelyn Smith, I'm looking at you). Yes, they do look, well, "lovely" -- in a slightly eerie way. But they don't look any more like their 25yo selves than they would have looked if they'd just let nature take its course.

So, do I accept my extremely saggy "pancake" breasts, or do I pursue the somewhat equally unattractive fake boob look? Neither option is perfect, so far as I'm concerned. The perils of time.

That all having been said, ask your surgeon, Tertia, about replacement/removal timeframes. The surgeons I've interviewed say every fake boob has a lifespan, and you WILL have to have them removed/replaced at some point. AND, every removal thins the tissues somewhat, making each subsequent surgery more tricky. Under-the-muscle is supposed to alleviate some of these issues, but the fact is, you're likely to need them replaced by the time you're sixty or seventy, when (a) who knows how much it will cost, and (b) who knows how well you'll tolerate surgery.

You can see, I bet, that I'm currently talking myself out of the boob job. But damn, would I love to get one. Good luck whatever you decide.

[P.S. I'm with Michelle on the whole "no one knows they're fake" conundrum. Maybe -- MAYBE -- no one can tell when you're in your twenties. I'll concede that. But by the time you're in your late thirties and then your forties, let's face it: the differences between real boobs and fake boobs are crystal clear.]

Michelle and Jody: the fake boobs you are noticing are the BAD boob jobs. You have never noticed a good one because......... they're GOOD. I have seen literally HUNDREDS of new breasts and I gotta say, MOST of them look rather natural! The women I dealt with weren't going for "20 something sex-kitten" but rather " in a perfect world, how my breasts at my age would look". I don't think Tertia is going for fakey-huge, but nicely placed, appropriately sized.. and if it's done right, you really would never know without a grope session... in which case you really shouldn't care, you're toughing Tertias BOOBS!

Tertia,

I just had implants 3 months ago as well as a tummy tuck.
I am not a large person, only 120lbs at 5'3".
My stomach had 5 'smiles' as we called them, and my boobs were just deflated balloons.
I'm still young and done having children (2) so my husband and I thought Why not!
We had the $$, and we had the time, so I went for it with no looking back.

It was SUCH a good decision.
Despite what many people say about not being able to tell, my boobs look 100% natural. (I AM 29, but regardless) I am a small C cup now. Not big and fake looking.
And I'm not just saying that because they are mine.
I'll even send pictures if you reply to this saying you want them.

You know what? I love how I can fill out a shirt or dress, I love the fact that I have a little bit of curves.
I told my PS that I wanted to air on the side of SMALL so he didn't decide to add in more CC's at the last minute while I was under.
He didn't!
he was very conservative.

I know that I'm going to enjoy my body for years and years to come.

It's not really a project if you know what you want and trust your surgeon.
I decided and had the surgery with in one month actually and then went on with my life.
This summer is going to be so great wearing a bikini for the first time in 5 years!

And BTW~normal ordinary people get breast augmentation. I'm just a SAHM in a regular neighborhood that is FAR FAR from the beach. I didn't do it to look sexy or hot, I did it to feel like I knew I could feel.

Do it!

Go for it, T.!!! Then show us yer tits!

I think I'm deemed something of an expert just by the mere fact that I live in Los Angeles. I think Mama Bean gave you the best advice = under the muscle, tear drop-shape, modest size increase.

Otherwise, they really do look "bolted on," as the gossip columnists are so fond of saying out here.

Good luck! My best friend from girlhood got boobs (from an A to a D... they DID look weird until they settled, but now they are glorious)and it has changed her life and improved her confidence exponentially!

Wouldn't bigger boobs make Marko want to bed you more often? Can you handle that?

Gab, you raise a very good point. That does worry me. I will have to develop bad BO to counteract the effects of the new boobs. Something will have to be done.

I had mine done 4 years ago. I love mine. Mine are under the muscle. Some people don't understand what it is like not to have a full chest. It isn't like we want huge boobs, we just want to look normal in our clothes. More G&D if you will. It all comes down to the "haves and have nots". My mom had the hardest time understand why my sister and I were desperate to have it done. My sister and I are bigger women and if you have ever tried to find shirts to fit in the bust when you have no bust, it is a awful experience.

I say to go for it! I'm sure you'll love the outcome!

If it will make you feel better about yourself go for it Tertia.

I have B's and was always happy with them...until I breastfed. I have now informed my husband that as soon as we are done having kids I would like new boobs please. I don't see anything wrong with it if you are doing it for yourself to make you feel more self confident! My husband could care less but I care.

Oh, I WISH getting new boobs would help here - too much on the chest as it is now. In my late 30's, mine are about to sag to my belly button...so depressing!

I say if you want it, go for it! I would love to improve on my "tubesocks". To have them back up where they used to be would be a miracle. It might make you feel better about yourself therefore making your marital relations (!) a bit better.

Who cares about boobs? (You are G & D and if you will feel G-er & D-er and that will help you? Do it. Remember my email ...whatever you have to do for you, will be doing something for him too. The only thing my husband makes me do if I want to do something a bit radical is make a list, be very, very honest, of why I think it's a good idea and what I want out of it, and based on that list (which I don't have to show him) if I still think it's good, I can go do. You've been thinking of the boobs for quite a while, so it's not a rash decision which is usually my no. 1 'for' point for anything ...oh, and do your blimming hair as well as the boobs would you?)

IVF with ICSI is only $3000.00 there??!!!!

I'm comin' to Sath Arfreca!! (OK, crap impression of an SA accent ...but IVF with ICSI is $10,000.00+ in NZ. $8,000.00 for standard fertilise-yer-own in a tube IVF, but 900.00 for an FET, so that's something I guess.)

And pray tell Rainbow ...what does one want to say ...? ;-)

no advice on the boobs...but I say go for it.

HOWEVER, what is the deal with the costs of IVF? Are you serious? hmmm I am DESPERATE for #2, but I have done 8 fresh IVFS and 3 FET's...and I have one living child (thank you Lord) Is SA my answer? Oh man, my husband is going to love this conversation.

Bet he would rather to talk about your boobs.

Mama-bean, the whole POINT of having a boob job by the time you're forty is to reverse the natural aging process. I'm willing to concede that I can't guess one way or the other on a woman up to (generously) the age of 35, but after that, if you have perky tear-drop shaped breasts, I'm going to assume they're implants. And I'm almost always going to be right.

Remember: I seriously think about a boob job. I'm not averse to it at all. Precisely because I'd rather have breasts that look more like 20-something breasts than 40-something breasts. But one of the costs is, no one will think for a minute that my perky breasts on my 40-something body are real.

[Don't forget, either, folks, that Tertia had breast reduction surgery in her early twenties. She probably knows more about the general issue than many of us.....]

I've got the DD boobs. I want the lovely flat stomach! Do what you want Tertia. Whatever makes you happy.

(Then there is the side of me that says that would feed my foster child in Indonesia for years!!)

I agree with Mama-Beans. Good boob jobs will look very nature. I had my done. They are certainly not high on the chest and they feel like real ones. Of course you only spot the bad ones, because the good ones will look the same as the nature breasts. Just make sure to get yourself a good plastic surgeon that specialize in boob jobs. :)

Go for it Tertia!

Hi Tertia,
Do I remember you saying you had a reduction at somepoint? Is that right, or am I making that up? And if that is the case, why on earth do you now want your breasts augmented if you had them reduced in the first place? Just seems a little odd to me.. take them off... put the back on again!

I have boobs. They are silicone cohesive gels and they are totally under the muscle. They hurt hell to get but worth every penny. I had negative A tiny tiny boob flaps after kids, and I have perky squishy large B small C's now. Best decision ever. Got them here in the US (Ohio) and they were 6,000.

For Saline - under the muscle is the preferred method to keep the breast more natural looking and feeling. Silicone can be placed under the natural breast tissue on top of the muscle. Silicone is much more natural looking and feeling. By not having to be placed under the muscle you have a lot less pain. I used to work for a plastic surgeon. The majority of the boob jobs that you can tell are boob jobs are saline. The under the muscle combined with the saline implant produces a much less natural look. I hate to tell the know it all's who are positive that they can "tell" every boob job out there but they are wrong. They can tell every bad boob job out there. I know this because I have seen way too many boobs. Before and after. For everywoman out there who is anti boob job, be happy with what you have, here is a polite up yours. I was almost an A cup on one side and almost a b cup on the other. I had to stuff half of my bra just to look normal. I was never able to wear any cute little sundress that had darts. I just wanted to fill out the top of the dress properly, not look like a porn star. I got a nice little boob job went to a 36C and have been happy ever since. That was 18 years ago. I have never had a problem and breast fed my son just fine.
