WTF is up with the teenage acne thing??? V v irritating. I have about FOUR pimples on my face. At least I look youthful.
I think it could be from the stress I have on a daily basis worrying about who I will offend next on my blog – the dialling code thing was a tongue in cheek thing, it was supposed to funny, ha ha. Geez, keep your broeks on. Thankfully most of you got it.
Then, a pic of the view from across my house. Pretty isn’t it. You can see it is our rainy season now. I love living where I do, it is five mins away from the ‘town’, but has such a country feel. Can you see the horsey in the pic, near the tape? And the plastic tape in the pic is not from a murder scene but to mark out the spot for a new house.
Check out that ‘broeks’ link, v funny and v typical of SA slang.

Jeez, some people will never "get" it, will they?
Don't waste any time wondering about people who don't get your sense of humour (note spelling - did that without thinking, so I must be a convert now), because the rest of us DO get you & love you JUST the way you are.
Acne thing may require a trip to the doctor for real help. I went for a facial a while back & commented on the same thing for my own face & the facialist was all "have you gotten a Rx from your doctor?" I hadn't. Did not even cross my mind. Some antibiotic lotion & a bit of antibiotic by mouth & I'm all better.
Think it starts out being a hormone thing & winds up something else. Very glad I went to the doctor & eased my suffering.
Remember - I love you JUST the way you are.
Warts & zits & all.
xoxo

PS - loved the link, very funny. But the picture doesn't load?!?

No, I got it. I just didn't think it was particularly kind is all. And it felt like a few of my fellow Americans were just a little too eager to jump on the "America Sucks" bandwagon in order to be accepted by the cool kids. My annoyance is more with them than it is with Tertia.
Yes, Tertia is Gorgeous and Divine, and I enjoy her site and (most of her)observations. I cried tears of joy for her when she got pregnant. I checked in nearly every day to make sure all was going well. I worried over Adam's lungs and Kate being away from her brother. I cheered for Marco as he made strides in being the cutest dad ever (Your mom says I'm not to talk to you). I don't know my point, other than to say that I'm a fan and I'm not bashing her. It's her blog and she can write whatever the hell she wants.

I've had a very similar experience since having the baby. He is who I blame this mess on. I've NEVER been one to get pimples(none that you can see anyway) so it's so his fault. That and the birth control, really has those hormones gone crazy.

I don't think Australians know their phone code either. Well maybe they do but Russell Crowe obviously doesn't. ;-)

Hey T - just a note. Since I'm between egg donation cycles, I came off the birth control last month. Damn am I happy, but I also broke out, too. I had like 5 nasty giant pimples on my face and neck. They're finally healing, and there don't appear to me any new ones on the horizon. Maybe that's why this happened to you.
Ciao!

Oh! I have to comment on the poll. It totally appeals to the scientist in me. Look at that beautiful normal distribution! I am inspired to do some more statistics :)

Love the link ;-) Although it took me a while to understand why broek is a strange word on this blog. I mean doesn't everybody wear them?
The most usefull word on this list in this household is dinges. Since my husband is extremely forgetfull he comes home from work often telling me things like you know dinges the wife of dinges bought this dinges and than I try to understand...
Mijk (who really must come to SA once. To enjoy sun and language...)

I am delurking to say that I love your G&D blog. We all need to learn to take things in stride and not take everything so personally. I'm an American and didn't know my international code either, seeing as I've never left here and don't make international calls. That's what the internet is for, learning things and looking up things that we don't know.
I loved your SA slang link. It's a wonder that you can write a blog and we all know what you're saying.
Love the babes, think they're G&D. Think you're G&D for being a working mom. Can't wait till I have my chance to do the same.

I was talking to my husband yesterday about your Marko vs. Paul post, and how my guy's a Marko but I'm okay with that, and then your story of Marko taking one of the babies for the night and telling her "Mommy says I'm not to talk to you" etc. And I told the husband that the best thing about your posts -- in addition to their being very funny -- is that you are so honest, even when you know you'll get busted for it by people who read and don't want to hear the bad bits. He told me I should write to you and tell you how much I respect you for being honest, and how much -- as a hopefully future parent in 4.5 months -- it is good for me to know the TRUTH, even if it's YOUR truth, and thanks very much.

I had managed to make it through my teenage years with only a smattering of zits.
Now that I'm in my thirties, I can't keep a hold on my face. Some days, it wants the most toxic, zit murdering, skin shrivelling stuff on the market.
Other days, adding that crud to my face produces a landscape that appears in danger of flaking away into nothing and only basic water and a pat dry seem to satisfy.
I hate my skin.

acne = youth
you lucky girl!!!

Tertia, do you have an Indian market near you? Go see if they have amla, or Indian gooseberry powder. It is a great face wash when made into a paste with a little warm water. Tighten pores and exfoliates. Might help.
The picture is gorgeous! My eyes just want to soak up all that green. Mmmmmmm. Don't let them build too many houses back there!

I would agree...I love America...I think lots of people love to bash it, but there are great things about the good old US of A! Like Target!!!!!!! Do you have those there, Tertia, or just Woolies? That sounds like a fun store.
More Kate and Adam pics! How do they interact?

Good golly, Ms. Tertia, could you please slow down? I can't keep up with all your posts!

You could always buy a little veil.
I personally find that small jerky swooping hand movements over my face distract people from staring at my pimples. Mainly because they are thinking 'Wacko, lets get outa here...'
Not that I get pimples. :-)

Is it a busy street? Will the chicklets be able to ride their trikes up and down the street and not worry about the traffic? How about hockey, will they be able to play it in the street? Roller blades, basketball, skateboards, bicycles, all the things you can look forward to...

eh, we all suck.
The road to enlightenment begins with accepting that and moving on.

Very pretty. :) the pic...not the pimples. ;)

Love the green in that pic. And I live where there's lots of green. Just wish I had that grass in my yard instead of weeds!
Off topic here, but what can you tell us about the dead "rain queen" that I just read about? I've never heard of a South African rain queen.

No, sorry, Judy, I have to disagree, Acne=oily skin! My mother is in her 60's and still gets the occasional break out. I'm in my 40's and it hasn't gone away for me either!
The upshot of this is we both look at least 10 years younger then we are, oily skin=less wrinkles!
Aside to my flag-waving country-woman, Robin, up there; excuse, me, but loving your country does not equal blind obedience!I knew that US foreign policy sucked long before I discovered how cool Tertia was! You keep waving your flag, though honey, I'll be counting the body bags.

To quote the very wise Matt Stone and Trey Parker about why non-America hates America....WARNING NOT FOR THE MILD MANNERED
"We're dicks. They're pussies. Terrorists are assholes. And pussies hate dicks because dicks fuck pussies. But dicks also fuck assholes. And if no one fucked assholes, they'd shit all over everyone."
Team America - World Police
Awesome movie. A must-must-must-must-must-must rent.

Just a heads up..Yasmin has an anti-andogen (I know I spelled that wrong) anywho it is an anti-testosterone to fight acne...if you are just going off of it your system may be returning to normal...hopefully it will clear in a few weeks (the same thing happened to me)

I'm an Aussie and have quite a few South African friends. The South African slang word I hear the most is definitely 'shame'. It is said in contexts that I think only a South African could get away with. I wonder if the fact that it crops up so much in my conversations with these South Africans actually says someting about me?!
Posted by: SimoneG | 14 June 2005 at 10:42 AM
My personal favourite has to be "Jawelnofine". What a perfect expression for everything!
I recognized some of the words in that list because my brother used to date a
G&D South African goldsmith, and the lekker slang words frequented their conversations. I still keep in touch with her even though she and my brother have since parted ways. She now lives in Boston and my brother in England, and they decided the distance was too big for them.
